This exciting workshop is for anyone involved with rescue dogs and will cover several topics including Assess-A-Pet temperament testing, training foster and shelter dogs for adoption, and a community outreach program called Training Wheels.

TEMPERAMENT TESTING FOR TRANSFERS

Many shelters find themselves with large numbers of dogs and fewer adopters while other shelters have waiting lists of adopters and few dogs for adoption As a result, for the past several years, many of us have been transferring dogs from our overcrowded southern shelters to less crowded shelters in the North who have more of a demand for adoptable mixed breed dogs.

This workshop will use two of the most critical components of Assess-A-Pet to provide shelters with a fast, safe test to use before deciding to transfer a dog.

The sociability and resource guarding parts of Assess-A-Pet allow you to quickly assess some important things regarding a dog's temperament. Social dogs get adopted quickly and stay in their homes. Dogs who resource guard can present a serious threat. So, being able to determine a dog's true sociability and identify any potential resource guarding problems is invaluable.

We will use demo dogs and participants will get hands-on experience.

TRAINING WHEELS

CREATING MORE HUMANE COMMUNITIES & KEEPING PEOPLE & PETS ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS

WHAT IS TRAINING WHEELS®?

Training Wheels® is a national mobile outreach program which takes shelter services to the people instead of waiting for the people to come to the shelter.

Training Wheels® is changing the face of sheltering in this country.

Training Wheels® brings shelter workers, dog trainers and volunteers into the community helping to keep people and pets in safe and rewarding relationships.

Instead of waiting for people to need the shelter, often at the end of the relationship with their pet, Training Wheels® takes the shelter out into the community to respond to the needs (be it educational, basic care, or financial) of the pet owners in a proactive and non-punitive way. Often people who most need help with their pets are least able to access and afford that help.

Through the various Training Wheels® programs, pet owners are often able to keep their pets and avoid having to relinquish them. Through various humane education programs, Training Wheels® fosters humane communities and public safety by teaching safe and humane interactions between people and animals.

Training Wheels® has programs especially geared for both urban and rural communities.
